Infant Baptism
Christ initiated the sacrament of Baptism when he was baptized by John the Baptist. Christ then orderd his apostles to baptize nations. Baptism removes original sin and bring us into the family of Church community as sons and daughters of God. In order for the Church to accept a child for the sacrament of Baptism, the pastor must be assured that the child will be raised Catholic. If the parent or parents are actively participating in their Catholic faith community, then we have that assurance. If they come from outside the parish to have their child baptized, then we must seek the permission of the pastor of the Catholic church where the parent(s) are members.
Since the promises made at Baptism intimately involve the entire parish community, we offer the option of celebrating the sacrament of Baptism during our weekend liturgies. Baptisms are celebrated during the 4:30 p.m. Saturday Mass and the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday Masses. To have your child baptized at St. Joseph, parent(s) must attend Batism class if it's their first child. For additional children, parent(s) should call and make an appointment with one of the priests or the pastoral associate. Call the parish office at 319-377-4869.
For information on Baptism of older children or adults, call the parish office at the above number.
